The Reality Behind Home Energy Consumption
“Expensive” is just one of the words that people today use to describe electricity bills. It seems that every day, the cost of electricity keeps getting higher and higher. Because of this, we all tend to look towards alternative energy sources.
However, as governments will tell you, the search for alternative energy sources does not come cheaply. Sometimes, the cost of developing one type of alternative energy source is just not feasible enough to be explored by the government.
There is also the problem of transition from conventional energy sources to the alternative energy sources. Many people are suspicious of any new methods and would prefer to stick with their conventional electricity.
However, these people are gradually being persuaded to the alternative side mainly because of the high cost of home energy consumption. New energy technology, of course, takes some time to perfect. In the meantime, there are a lot of things you can do to minimize your home energy consumption.
The energy of information administration of the US department of energy has recently concluded a survey on the home energy consumption of US households during the year 2001. Through this data, we can at least gain an insight of which appliances are costing us.
At the top of the list, of course, is climate control. Would you believe that American households consume over 400billion kWh just to keep themselves cool or hot? That’s over 30 percent of the total home energy consumption! Do we really need to consume that much energy just to feel warmer or cooler?
When you use the air-conditioning system or the furnace, maybe you shouldn’t turn the thermostat up so high. It’s not like you are living in the equator or the North Pole, at least most of us aren’t. And when you go out of the house, remember to turn your air-conditioning or heating off. Think of how much you will be able to save from your home energy costs just by turning these appliances off when you are not using them.
Next, we come to the kitchen. Kitchen appliances count for 26.7 percent of home energy consumption. Of course, you can’t really turn off your refrigerator when you are not home, could you? Don’t panic, however, there are a lot of alternatives in order to help you reduce your electricity bill.
Did you know that leaving the refrigerator door open increases your home energy consumption? It’s true! When you open your refrigerator door, heat rushes inside the refrigerator. This means that the fridge has to consume more electricity in order to maintain its internal temperature. If you leave the door open, you are wasting electricity!
Water heating cost US households 104.1 billion kWh in electricity. Now let me ask you: is it really necessary that you use hot water when you take a bath? After all, millions of people all over the world take cold showers everyday. Hot baths are a luxury. If people treated them as such, then they wouldn’t have any problem saving on their home energy consumption. If you do not agree with this, you have to understand that there are alternatives to using electricity to heat your water.
As a matter of fact, there are solar heaters out there which not only save electricity by using solar power to heat your water, but these can also be connected to power small appliances. If everyone just invested in these ideas, people would be able to lessen their home energy consumption considerably.
Now, we come to lighting. Did you know that lighting counts for 8.8 percent of home energy consumption? Now, people would agree that you need light in order to see your way around the house. However, there’s just one question: do you really need to have the lights on 24 hours? When you think about it, the sun still exists, doesn’t it? Why do some people pull down their window shades and then turn on the lights? Doesn’t that seem a little silly?
So, as you may have observed, there are a lot of easy ways by which we can cut back our home energy consumption. Just by exerting a little effort, we can save a lot of our money. Did you realize how much energy our homes consume just because of thoughtlessness?
Of course you could install Solar Panels on your roof or/and a wind turbine and not only provide yourself with all your home energy needs but you could sell your surplus energy and provide yourself with an additional income. Your costs would only be for the initial purchase and installation of the equipment, after that you would get free home energy and a future income to pay off your initial costs.
Pollution and Sustainable Power
Pollution causes instability, discomfort, disorder and harms the environment and the people living with it. There are many kinds of pollutants it could be noise, energy, light, heat, and worst chemical.
The World Health Organization, The U.N., and governments from all over the world are now concerned with pollution. You hear celebrities calling a call to arms, to unite against pollution. A media frenzy on how polluted the planet is the event of the decade.
Unknown to a lot of people, the issue of pollution is not one that’s been discovered during the 19th century. During the 9th towards the 13th century Arabic writings regarding pollution were already prevalent.
Pollution causes instability, discomfort, disorder and harm to the environment and the people living with it. There are many kinds of pollutants, it could be noise, energy, light, heat, and worst chemicals. Air pollution as a cause became popular towards the end of world war II when the effects of atomic testing and the atomic bomb became undeniably destructive.
Over time, the growing pollution made people realize that the main cause of nature’s demise is our relentless use of energy. This gave rise to environmentalism and the quest for sustainable power. Energy is an integral part of the human world. We cannot live without energy; our very existence depends on it. That is why it is imperative that we find alternate energy resources that will never be exhausted and will not harm the environment as time goes by.
If you believe that reverting to a “traditional” way of life will reduce or at least slow down the effects of pollution then you’re wrong. The moment fire was discovered, and the use of metals were used was the start of pollution. Even human wastes probably some polluted some areas since the early times.
Pollution gradually increases as humanity evolves and society develops. In fact glacier slices in Greenland show pollution in the ancient Mesopotamian, Greek, roman and Chinese era. A closer study showed that pollution increases with the rise in the utilization of metals. With the decline of any human social progress the middle ages showed a slow pollution progress, although pollution was generally concentrated in pocketed areas like cities.
The gradual increase of populations and the widespread use of industrial processes saw the materialization of a civilization that is slowly but surely creating a negative impact on nature. It was inevitable that pollution would get so severe that people would finally notice that the environment is slowly degenerating. The industrial revolution paved the way for total environmental pollution as we know it today.
Sustainable Power
A sustainable energy source since ancient times, the power of the wind has been harnessed by sailors, farmers, and architects . In times long gone, from 5,000 years ago and rediscovered again today the Egyptians used wind power to propel their sailing vessels, and Babylonian architects use architectural designs to make use of the wind to ventilate their palace and temple complexes.
The thing about sustainable energy is that it arouses debates from politicians, NGO’s, advocates and opponents, all have certain grounds for saying that sustainable power works or doesn’t work. Perhaps we should begin by defining what sustainable power is. When we say sustain it means to support, uphold, to keep from falling. So when we say sustainable power it means energy with unending resources. In the case of today’s sustainable energy, which means endless resources for power supply without the harmful effects on the environment.
What happens when the oil prices and production costs get too high? What if our fossil fuel supply runs out? What will happen then? Actually, to fully appreciate sustainable power, these aren’t the only questions we should ask. Perhaps we should inquire: Where does our electricity supply come from? How are far off towns furnished with power? Sustainable energy is not just for the future, it is here, it is now.
In all reality it is not sustainable energy that precipitates the conflict. It is the “alternate source” of energy that is the root of all things that creates conflict. A lot of people argue that alternate energy resources are simply too new a resource fuelled by technology for it to be really said that it is indeed safe.
What is more, some authorized people on the matter of energy say that alternate energy resources are simply not powerful enough to cope with the demands of the world. No matter which way we argue alternate energy resources are part of sustainable power and sustainable power means humans live on as a species; we’re not supposed to die or else it is useless for us to look for ways to improve ourselves. After all isn’t the future the reason for our continued quest to be better and more environmentally aware?
